Verizon has launched a plan that will allow customers to have a second phone line without having to have a second phone.
The plan, dubbed Second Number, allows customers to get a second line with unlimited talk and text for an introductory cost of $10 a month.
“Customers increasingly use two phone numbers to manage their busy lives,” Verizon said in a statement. From safely selling on online marketplaces to operating side gigs, to replacing landlines or getting a special number just for family, customers want access to a second phone number—and often, get a second phone to do so.”
Verizon isn’t the only company offering second line services, according to Android Authority. While there are cheaper alternatives, nearly all the free or lower cost options use a special app for calls and texts.
“This won’t provide as stable or reliable of a connection as you’d get with Second Number,” Android Authority said. “Some of these apps have other advantages including support for multiple virtual numbers, cheap international calling rates, and more.”
Verizon announced the plan this month Thursday, March 7. It will offer the new service for $10 a month until June 5. Customers who sign up after June 5 can get Second Number for $15 a month.
The service is available to customers with dual SIM phones. If a customer upgrades their phone, Second Number lines will automatically transfer, Verizon said.
The service will allow customers to swap between lines for phone and messaging apps seamlessly, Verizon said. Customers will be able to see which line is being used for an incoming call or text message, and replys will automatically go out on those same lines.
