Fiji’s biggest telco welcomes Starlink

The arrival in Fiji of Elon Musk’s Starlink introduces new potential for innovation and connectivity in Fiji and has been welcomed by Fiji’s biggest telecommunications company.

ATH Group CEO Ivan Fong said it’s a development they view not just as competition.

“We will surely compete in some areas, however, Starlink and other broadband satellite solutions also present complementary opportunities that can enhance the telecommunications ecosystem,” Mr Fong said.

Mr Fong was responding to questions sent by The Fiji Times on the recent licensing of SpaceX subsidiary Starlink as Fiji’s newest Internet Service Provider (ISP).

“In all markets, including Fiji, there are always areas that are very difficult to serve, so the more options available to serve these areas is a good thing.”

He said despite the tyranny of distance and smaller market sizes, the ATH Group is proud to be delivering advanced broadband services via fiber mobile and wireless technologies in a nation that is globally ranked with the third lowest data prices in the world, “demonstrating our dedication to delivering value to our customers”.

“Our expansive range of services goes well beyond internet connectivity, and we are steadfast in our investment in resilient infrastructure that upholds Fiji’s economic and digital growth.

“The ATH Group’s significant contributions through tax, duty, job creation, community-driven CSR initiatives, and USO funding are pillars of our commitment to Fiji’s prosperity.”

Mr Fong confirmed that representatives of Starlink and ATH subsidiaries have had meetings on possible commercial partnerships, details of which he wasn’t privy to.
