Telia 5G covers 99% of Lithuanian territory

Telia Lietuva has announced it has completed the upgrade of its entire mobile network with Ericsson equipment and therefore now covers 99% of Lithuania’s territory with 5G services. At present, a total of 1,650 5G mobile base stations are operational, and the operator says that further development of 5G will continue through the deployment of ‘ultra high speed’ base stations in existing locations.

‘We are very proud of our strategic partnership with Telia Lietuva, which is starting the extraordinary implementation of 5G communication,’ said Daniel Ode, Interim Head of Customers North and Central Europe at Ericsson, adding: ‘We are pleased to have completed the Telia network upgrade and achieved an excellent 99% geographic coverage in Lithuania. This significant event marks the beginning of an exciting journey, the goal of which is to create advanced 5G opportunities for the Lithuanian market, useful for all people, even in the most remote areas. Together, we are ready to create a future full of cutting-edge possibilities provided by 5G technology.’

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, Telia paid EUR23 million (USD25.4 million) for one 2×10MHz block of 700MHz spectrum and EUR7 million for 100MHz of 3.5GHz spectrum at auction in August 2022 and went on to launch 5G using its newly acquired frequencies the following month, having operated a 2100MHz 5G network in the capital Vilnius since the start of that year. The 3.5GHz service covers densely populated areas and can reach maximum speeds of up to 2Gbps, while the 700MHz band network has slower speeds but covers a much wider area.
