Airtel Africa has announced that its Nigerian unit has renewed its existing 2100MHz spectrum licence with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for a period of 15 years, effective from 1 May 2022 to 30 April 2037, at a cost of NGN58.7 billion (USD127.4 million).
With the original 3G licence (permitting the use of 2×10MHz in the 2100MHz frequency band) having expired last year, the regulator granted the ongoing use of the concession pending conclusion of renewal negotiations. Commenting on the development, Airtel Africa stated: ‘This investment to renew the licence reflects our continued confidence in the opportunity inherent across the Nigerian market, supporting the local communities and economies through furthering digital inclusion and connectivity.’
