Azerbaijan expands fiber networks

More than 649,000 households across Azerbaijan are now covered by GPON-based fibre-optic networks, the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport (MDDT) has revealed. In a press release the MDDT highlighted deployments had been stepped up since the end of 2020, when some 227,000 homes had access to fibre broadband services.

The fiber deployment is being carried out under a national programme that aims to provide nationwide fixed broadband coverage and increase average download speeds to at least 25Mbps by the end of 2024, through a public-private partnership model. State-owned operator AzTelekom is currently upgrading its infrastructure, using GPON and other broadband technologies, in 60 regions and cities across the country, including Baku, Absheron, Shamkir, Jalilabad, Tovuz and Gazakh.
