Nepal Telecom has restored the CDMA mobile service in Byas rural municipality of Darchula District. The CDMA tower of Nepal Telecom situated at Byas will also cover the Kalapani area, which is now there in the newly unveiled Map of Nepal.
As the government established a new Armed Police Force BOP (Border outpost) near Kalapani, Nepal Telecom initiates to provide mobile service there, with the support of the Ministry of Home affairs.
The Byas CDMA tower will provide the mobile service to Changru, Kalapani, Gunji, Kuti, and Tinker areas. Now with the resumption, people can at least make a call and use slow data with the service. As per Clickmandu, the tower will facilitate people in some parts of India as well, for communication.
Due to some critical issues, the site was not operational for a long time. The government-owned company took the tower’s maintenance with high priority and restored the tower of much significance. The service restoration comes at such a crucial time when there is a border dispute between India and Nepal.
For now, Nepal Telecom has only resumed the CDMA service. But as the infrastructure is already in place, we suggest them to operate GSM service. It will serve more people in the area and have more significance, as most people have a GSM mobile.
CDMA technology is a boon to serve the mobile signal in the remote areas, so it is suited for a country like Nepal. But due to several regions including no further evolution, the country’s regulator has decided to sunset CDMA from the year 2022. Similarly, Nepal Telecom has also prepared to shut down the CDMA service by that time.
