Morocco's smartphone penetration rate among mobile phone users rose to 75.7 percent at the end of 2018, up from 73.4 percent a year earlier, according to a national representative survey carried out by telecom regulator ANRT. This represents an annual increase of almost 1.2 million additional smartphone owners, bringing the total to 22.5 million.
At household level, 74.2 percent of Moroccan homes had access to the internet, up by 4 percentage points from 2017. At geographical level, the gap in the adoption rate between homes in urban and rural areas remained significant (82.4% versus 56.8% respectively).
Looking at the type of access, 20.2 percent of households relied on fixed line connections to go online, with nearly all of them equipped with mobile internet, too. The take-up of fixed line connections more than doubled since 2012 to peak at 20.7 percent in 2016, before registering a small decline in 2017 (19.4%).
