Media Broadcast to complete Freenet TV rollout in autumn

German transmitter network operator Media Broadcast will make its DVB-T2 platform Freenet TV available in seven additional metropolitan areas by autumn 2018.

The commercial TV channel package will launch in Bielefeld in August, Chemnitz and Gera will follow on September 26, Heilbronn and Ulm on October 24 and Kaiserslautern and Trier on November 28.

The new locations will add 3.9 million households to the technical reach. A total of around four out of five inhabitants in Germany will then be able to receive Freenet TV on DTT.

With this fourth rollout, Media Broadcast will complete the currently planned Freenet TV deployment which will then be transmitted from a total of 63 locations throughout Germany.

ARD and ZDF are expanding the DVB-T2 network in parallel, also serving regions where Freenet TV will not be offered, mainly in rural areas. The public broadcasters will complete their DVB-T2 rollout in 2019.

DVB-T2 was introduced in March 2017 with two further rollouts to additional regions accomplished in November 2017 and April 2018.
