Sri Lankan telecom operators to offer more data to subscribers

Sri Lanka’s licensed telecommunications operators said that all mobile and fixed line subscribers would be granted a 10 percent bonus usage on internet packages/cards.

Issuing a joint statement they said that this will be a special gesture to mark the removal of telecom levy by the Government.

“The removal of the telco levy on internet by the Government was a forward-looking move towards improving affordability and creation of a digital Sri Lanka,” it said.

This bonus internet offer is subject to the approval by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka and will be implemented along with the removal of telco levy on internet effective 1 September.

Sri Lanka’s Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera announced a 10 percent tax cut on telecom data and small vehicles like lorries and motor cycles last week to encourage entrepreneurship.
