The South Korean government will adopt "universal" mobile subscription fees next year, Yonhap news agency reports. According to the Korean Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, the measure aims to reduce the cost burden for mobile phone users.
According to the draft version of the revision to the telecommunication law, which is subject to parliamentary endorsement, users will be able to subscribe to a service package with between 1 and 1.3 gigabytes of data for KRW 20,000 (approximately USD 18) per month. This compares to the existing package of KRW 30,000 bundled with less data, a representative of the Ministry added.
The Ministry also plans to allow more operators to provide mobile phone and internet services on the local market. To this end, the government plans to change the current system of granting permission to simple registration.
