TV platform operators, connected TV devices give winter boost to BBC iPlayer

Data released by the BBC has revealed that there were 309 million TV and radio requests for programmes on its iPlayer on-demand and catch-up service during December 2015.

In terms of how people were accessing the service, overall there was a slight decrease in requests from computers, while the other devices saw increases compared to November. Most notable was the increase in TV platform operators and connected TV devices, as, said the BBC, big screen viewing proved popular over the festive period. TV screens saw the biggest monthly increase, up 4%, while computers saw a 6% decline month-on-month and mobiles/tablets grew 1-2%.

The reality show The Apprentice was by far the most popular series in December 2015, with episode nine being the top-performing, and overall made up four out of the top five programmes. Episode one in the new series of Idris Elba-led cop drama Luther, also featured well, along with seasonal drama And Then There Were None and Christmas Special episodes of EastEnders and Mrs Brown’s Boys.
