Telstra announces LEO satellite connectivity for customers

Telstra announced its Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity, powered by Starlink, is now available at $125/month for its customers.

Telstra will also charge $599 upfront for the Starlink Standard Kit.

Telstra group executive consumer Brad Whitcomb wrote in Telstra’s blog the service includes unlimited data and estimated peak speeds of 50Mbps download and 10Mbps upload speeds.

The speed may still vary since the connectivity might be impacted by other factors such as kit location, sky visibility, and severe weather conditions.

Users get a Telstra Smart Modem 3 and a Starlink Standard Kit when they subscribe to the connection.

Telstra said the Telstra Smart Modem 3 is the same modem they supply with their nbn home internet services.

“This provides a home phone connection and if you live in an area with 4G mobile coverage, the Telstra Smart Modem 3 will also automatically swap to that connection if there’s an issue with your satellite connectivity,” Telstra said.

Included in the Starlink Standard Kit is the Starlink phased array antenna plus all the cables users need to make it work together.

If users live in a bigger place that needs extended Wi-Fi coverage, they can install Smart Wi-Fi boosters. Telstra said users can cancel with no further charge.

Users may visit a Telstra store for assistance or tap their MyTelstra app to talk to an agent.

Users who feel the quality is not up to standards may return the hardware within 30 days. Telstra will refund the first monthly fee plus any hardware repayment costs.

Telstra said the satellite home internet services can be plugged in immediately without technical assistance.

Telstra uses a mix of technologies to provide voice and broadband services in rural and remote Australia, including nbn fixed and fixed wireless broadband, our mobile network, and older copper and radio networks.
