Airtel Tanzania MD reveals tower expansion in rural locations

Airtel Tanzania managing director Dinesh Balsingh revealed the operator had expanded its coverage with newly constructed towers, as part of an initiative to boost connectivity in rural locations, The Citizen reported.

Balsingh announced the Bharti Airtel subsidiary built 30 new communication towers with the aim to deploy 758 in rural Tanzania, as part of a partnership with government scheme, the Universal Communications Service Access Fund.

Balsingh also urged the government to cut taxes on mobile devices to increase mobile device penetration in the country, stating the spread of devices and connectivity services can improve the lives of citizens.

The MD did hail the government for its removal of airtime levies and reductions in right-of-way charges and billboard fees in July last year. This spurred the expansion of fibre coverage but Balsingh did not detail how far Airtel’s network now reaches.
