CelcomDigi Berhad (CelcomDigi) and SES, a leading content connectivity satellite solutions provider, today inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on a strategic partnership to explore providing satellite connectivity using SES’s Medium-Earth-Orbit (MEO) and Geosynchronous Equatorial Orbit (GEO) satellites for businesses and communities in Malaysia.
Under this MoU, CelcomDigi, through its subsidiaries, will collaborate with SES to explore the development of a local gateway for Satellite Communication (SatCom) services in Malaysia. Both SES and CelcomDigi will explore harnessing SES’s GEO and MEO satellites with CelcomDigi's infrastructure, such as the site operated by Celcom Timur Sdn Bhd, to provide enterprise-grade satellite connectivity services with high throughput, low latency, and a committed service level agreement (SLA).
SES owns and operates 70 satellites, out of which 26 are MEO satellites. SES’s MEO satellites orbit 8,000 km above Earth to provide high-performance connectivity services virtually anywhere in the world. CelcomDigi will explore how connectivity services such as 4G, 5G, SDWAN and managed Wi-Fi can be delivered through SES’s satellite technology.
The MoU was signed by Datuk Idham Nawawi, CEO of CelcomDigi and Nadine Allen, Global Head of Enterprise & Cloud of SES, witnessed by Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman, Tan Sri Mohamad Salim bin Fateh Din, and CelcomDigi’s chair of the board, YM Tengku Dato’ Sri Azmil Zahruddin, at Mobile World Congress 2024 in Barcelona, Spain.
“Our collaboration with SES, beginning with our infrastructure in Malaysia, opens many possibilities in enhancing our 4G LTE and 5G connectivity services for businesses and communities, enabling more Malaysians with digital opportunities in today’s digital economy. We remain committed to deliver reliable services and consistent experience to our customers on our widest and fastest network across the country and are proud to partner with leading content connectivity satellite solutions provider SES to deliver this technology nationwide,” said Datuk Idham Nawawi.
Nadine Allen, Global Head of Enterprise & Cloud of SES, said: “We are pleased to sign this MoU with CelcomDigi to explore joint opportunities for high-speed connectivity and reliable network access via our unparalleled reach and proven MEO and GEO technology. In this digital era, connectivity is of upmost importance, and we will work closely together to connect enterprises and communities in the most remote parts of Malaysia.”
