Guam telecoms and digital infrastructure provider GTA announced that Philippines-based carrier PLDT Global has established a PoP in its GTA GNC iX Data Centre.
GTA said the new Guam PoP will provide PLDT Global with enhanced network performance, reduced latency, and route diversity. It will also serve as a strategic gateway to transpacific connectivity, providing PLDT Global access to each of Guam’s cable landing stations and related 12 subsea cable systems.
“By utilizing GTA’s GNC iX Data Center as our new Point of Presence, PLDT Global is poised to deliver increased value to our customers, offering enhanced network performance and a diverse array of connectivity options,” said Albert Villa-Real, president and CEO of PLDT Global, the international arm of PLDT.
Roland Certeza, president and CEO of GTA, said that the partnership with PLDT Global would propel the growth of Guam’s data centre industry, promoting the island as a regional hub for resilient, high-capacity connectivity and attracting new businesses to the area.
“Guam stands at the crossroads of international connectivity, and with our latest PoP, we are unlocking unparalleled opportunities to bring more interconnection opportunities to our ecosystem of carriers across the APAC region for our partners,” Certeza said in a statement “GTA’s GNC iX Data Center is increasingly appealing to carriers in need of an Asia hub for IP transit, peering, and colocation to address the increasing requirements and growing operations that connect individuals, businesses, and the global community.”
Guam has become a focal point in recent subsea cable projects in the Pacific islands. Last month, Google Cloud revealed its central Pacific Connect initiative with Amalgamated Telecom Holdings (ATH), APTelecom, and Telstra, which aims to build two subsea cables forming a ring that connects Guam, French Polynesia and Fiji by 2026.
At the time, Brian Quigley, VP of global network infrastructure at Google Cloud, said the ring would “join Guam’s existing subsea cable portfolio — which includes Apricot, Echo, and Taiwan-Philippines-US – accelerating the island’s position as a growing gateway for international connectivity.”
Guam is also a key landing point for the transpacific Echo subsea cable backed by Google and Meta that will run between California, Indonesia, Palau and Singapore. Telstra International and Trans Pacific Networks (TPN) announced last month that they will co-build and operate the Echo cable.
