Zambia’s government has plans to build 60 4G mobile towers, aiming to enhance internet connectivity in rural regions. This comes two months after the announcement of plans to create digital hubs for free internet access for citizens. The commitment to prioritize rural connectivity was emphasized by Felix Mutati, the Minister of Technology and Science, during the commissioning of a 4G network tower installed by MTN Zambia in the Mushindamo district.
It’s stated that 60 new and upgraded mobile network towers will be established in the North Western Province to improve rural connectivity. Meanwhile, 19 new towers will be built, and 2G connectivity will be upgraded to 4G in this province alone.
Minister Mutati underscored the importance of partnerships with the private sector. He revealed that MTN Zambia plans to upgrade 50 of its network towers from 2G and 3G to 4G, contributing to the country’s digital transformation. Additionally, while acknowledging Mushindamo district as the least connected region in the province, the Minister assured that development will extend to other districts.
Abbad Reda, the CEO of MTN Zambia, revealed that the company has set up 110 rural sites and upgraded 18 universal sites from 2G to 3G technology. In November 2022, MTN Zambia made history by launching its 5G service, becoming the first telecom company in the region to do so.
Zambia has shown strong dedication to digital development. Two months prior, plans were revealed to develop Community Digital Transformation Centres, which aim to expand the country’s digital ecosystem and provide free internet to citizens.
Furthering this progress, the government announced in December 2023 that every member of the Zambian parliament would receive a Starlink kit for their individual constituencies. The government plans to finance this initiative for the first year.
