Local production of mobile phones drops in Bangladesh

Mobile phone manufacturing in Bangladesh decreased in December 2023, marking a decline of 3.22lakh units, compared with that in the previous month, according to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission data.

However, the import of mobile phone witnessed a rise after a single month break.

In December 2023, the total production of mobile phones in the country reached 21.10 lakh units, a fall from 24.32 lakh units recorded in November 2023.

Of the 21.10 lakh units manufactured in December, 17.28 lakh featured 2G technology, while 3.82 lakh were equipped with 4G technology and 250 were 5G technology-enabled.

The second generation phones, also known as feature phones, accounted for 81.89 per cent of the total units manufactured in December 2023, while smartphones constituted 18.11 per cent.

Of the 24.32 lakh units manufactured in November 2023, 17.40 lakh were equipped with 2G technology, 6.79 lakh featured 4G technology and 13,000 had 5G capability.

In November 2023, feature phones held 71.57 per cent of the total production, while smartphones constituted 28.43 per cent.

The number of locally made smartphones decreased to 18.11 per cent of the total mobile phone production in December 2023 compared with that of 28.43 per cent in November 2023.

According to the BTRC data, there has been no production of 3G mobile phones in the country since January 2023.

The number of imported mobile phones was 10,009 units in December 2023 while no mobile phones were imported in the previous month.

Out of the 10,009 units imported in December 2023, 9 were equipped with 4G technology and 10,000 were 5G technology-enabled.

In December 2023, no feature phones were imported.
