BT signs connectivity agreement with Iraqi gas company BGC

BT Group has partnered with Iraqi gas company Basrah Gas Company (BGC) to provide communications across the country.

BGC is Iraq’s largest gas flare reduction company and a joint venture between the Iraqi Government, Shell, and Mitsubishi.

According to BT, the network will provide secure and reliable connectivity for BGC sites across multiple locations, including gas fields, processing plants, and offices.

The company will also provide enhanced connectivity to hyperscalers and delivery of cloud-based applications such as Microsoft 365 and SAP.

“Collaborating with BT is an important milestone for BGC," said Andrew Wiper, managing director of BGC.

"The bedrock of our operations lies in robust and efficient connectivity, and this contract reinforces our commitment to efficiency and safety.”

Eyad Shihabi, managing Director, global industries and government, business, BT added: “We’re very proud of our relationship with JV BGC. This partnership represents a new chapter in this relationship by delivering the high standards of quality and reliability of services directly to BGC in Iraq.”

Back in 2018, BT committed to becoming a net zero carbon emissions business by 2045, before bringing this target forward considerably to 2031.

Founded in 2013, BGC is aiming to fulfill Iraq’s strategy of energy independence and further investment in its natural gas resources.

Tech companies have been accused in the past by environmentalists such as Greenpeace, of "helping big oil companies profit at the expense of the environment."
