Somaliland-based telecoms operator Telesom launched a commercial 5G network at the start of the year, with both mobile and fixed wireless access (FWA) services available to residential and business customers.
According to the company, the launch ‘will not only improve the lives of individuals, but will also catalyse to economic growth and innovation in different parts of rural and urban communities’. 5G network coverage is available in the following locations: Hargeisa, Burco, Buuhoodle, Borama, Berbera, Erigavo, Gabiley, Laascaanood, Sheekh, Wajaale, Widhwidh and Xudun. In order to access the new mobile services, customers also require a 5G compatible smartphone, including handsets from Apple, Google, OnePlus and Xiaomi, with Samsung devices set to follow soon.
As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, another Somaliland-based operator – Somtel – launched commercial 5G services at the start of this year, with coverage said to be available in Hargeisa.
