Telkomsel and ITB collaborate on '5G Hive' innovation lab

Indonesian telco Telkomsel is collaborating with the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) to launch ‘5G Hive Laboratory’, a research centre to develop 5G tech solutions and innovations.

Telkomsel said the two organisations are conducting joint research focused on developing a sustainable 5G ecosystem via various advanced 5G use cases, which include IoT, artificial intelligence and smart city solutions.

For example, Telkomsel and ITB will use the lab to explore innovations in areas such as 5G network optimization, drones for industrial B2B use cases and smart video analytics for security and data management, which Telkomsel says could increase its capacity to provide AI-based solutions for businesses.

Other use cases on the docket include IoT apps for smart homes and industrial solutions, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technology, and research related to ESG goals.

The 5G Hive will also support development of workforce skills that will be needed as apps and services powered by 5G and AI become more prevalent in Indonesia, Telkomsel said.

As with most such initiatives, Telkomsel and ITB also tied the activity of the 5G Hive Lab to their respective CSR and ESG strategies, as well as the country’s goals of transforming into a digital society and a tech innovation centre that will attract international investment.

"Through this collaborative initiative, we are committed to bringing innovation that not only advances industry, but also has a significant impact on Indonesian society and the economy,” said Saki Hamsat Bramono, Telkomsel's VP of corporate communications and social responsibility.
