Sunrise confirms mid-2025 date for 3G shutdown

Swiss full-service provider Sunrise has confirmed the planned switch-off date for its 3G network, stating that it will deactivate the system by mid-2025 to free up resources for 4G and 5G services.

Sunrise notes that the shutdown will allow it to use the existing 3G spectrum in the 900MHz band for 5G. The technology currently accounts for less than 1% of Sunrise’s mobile data usage and the provider claims that the platform provides less stable and lower quality voice transmission, with a call drop rate 2.5 times higher than 4G. As noted by TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Sunrise switched off its 2G network in January this year and had set out plan in mid-2022 to deactivate the 3G network within the next three to four years (i.e. 2025-2026).
