US$100 million plan to improve connectivity in Senegal’s border areas

The Senegalese government is working with its partners to implement the ‘Universal Digital Access’ programme which aims to improve connectivity in the country’s border areas, Agence Ecofin reports. Outlining the USD100 million project during a regional tour last week, President Macky Sall said the initiative should make it possible to provide quality telecom services to thousands of people in 200 previously unserved and underserved localities.

The project forms part of a package of government measures designed to improve the quality and availability of telecom services throughout the country, thereby accelerating Senegal’s digital transformation. It follows President Sall’s call last March for the implementation of an urgent plan to achieve nationwide network coverage ‘as soon as possible’. Other initiatives include the launch of national mobile roaming and the country’s connection to Meta’s 2Africa submarine cable system. Senegal’s Digital Economy Acceleration Project (Projet d’Acceleration de l’Economie Numerique, PAEN) is being supported by a USD150 million finance package awarded by the World Bank in April this year.
