Movistar to boost ‘5G ready’ coverage to 95% by mid-24

Telefonica Moviles El Salvador, which provides services under the Movistar brand name, has revealed that it has completed the first phase of deployment of its LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) network, described by the company as ‘5G ready’. DPL News reports that the service has been rolled out to the country’s main towns and cities as part of a previously announced USD280 million investment programme that started last year. The next phase involves expansion to the country’s interior to provide greater coverage in border, rural and remote areas in cooperation with Chinese vendor Huawei. The second stage is scheduled to conclude in June 2024 and will increase coverage to 95% of the populated territory, Eduardo Solorzano, Director of Corporate Affairs and Wholesale Business, was quoted as saying.

The LTE-A network utilises spectrum in the 850MHz and 1900MHz frequency bands. Solorzano added that the company will also utilise its Extended AWS band spectrum (1755MHz-1770MHz/2155MHz-2170MHz) – acquired at auction in July – to increase network capacity in main towns and cities at the end of this year to improve quality of service.
