Streaming growth continues in Barb Establishment Survey

Despite continued pressures on the cost of living. 19.3 million UK homes (67.3%) had access to a subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service in Q3 2023, an increase on the 18.8 million (65.9%) that had access in Q2 2023.

Netflix remains the market leader with 16.7 million UK homes in Q3 2023, a slight increase from 16.5m (57.7%) in Q2, though not necessarily the levels that might be expected following the streamer’s crackdown on password sharing.

Amazon Prime Video reported 13 million (45.3%) homes, up from 12.6 million (44%) in Q2; Disney+ is on 7.6 million homes (26.7%), an increase from 7.2 million (25.2%) in Q2. Apple TV+ added another 300,000 homes, taking it to 2.2 million (7.8%). Paramount+ is now on 1.9 milliom UK homes (6.7%), an increase from 1.7m (5.9%) in Q2, when Barb began to report on the service. However, Sky’s NOW lost 100,000 and now stands at 1.9 million (6.5%).

Justin Sampson, Barb’s Chief Executive, said: “The latest data from our Establishment Survey again shows how SVOD services have established themselves within the UK viewing ecosystem. Over two-thirds of homes subscribe to at least one, while most services have seen growth over the previous quarter. As with any TV service, content is a significant influence in attracting people. Our viewing data shows how new titles and library programming combine to drive time spent with these SVOD services.”

Barb reports SVOD services with a household penetration of more than 5%.
