Telkomsel boosts 4G and 5G network for FIFA U-17 World Cup

Telkomsel has beefed up its 4G and 5G networks in stadiums and high-traffic areas across four cities in preparation for the 20th FIFA U-17 World Cup tournament in Indonesia next month.

FIFA U-17 World Cup matches will be played in Jakarta International Stadium, Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung, Manahan Stadium in Surakarta and Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium in Surabaya.

With the event expected to attract 10,000 to 18,000 fans per stadium per match, Telkomsel says it has mapped out locations in all four cities that are likely to see significant growth in communications traffic during the tournament. Apart from the stadiums themselves, that includes training field areas, shopping centres, media centres and transportation transit points such as airports and train stations.

Telkomsel said it has optimized the capacity and quality of its mobile broadband network on more than 1,300 LTE base stations and 45 5G base stations. It’s also added 97 LTE base stations and two 5G base stations to provide extra capacity for the stadiums.

Telkomsel Network Director Nugroho said the objective is to support the best possible digital experience for fans – and showcase Indonesia’s ability to support major events.

“Telkomsel has ensured the readiness of its 4G/LTE and Hyper 5G broadband network, which enables comfortable digital connectivity for all official teams, journalists, tourists both domestic and foreign, as well as the surrounding community,” he said.

Noting that this is the first time Indonesia has hosted the U-17 World Cup, he added, "With all the efforts that have been made, Telkomsel is ready to support Indonesia's success as host for state events and international sports such as the U-17 World Cup.”

FIFA U-17 World Cup Indonesia 2023 takes place from 10 November to 2 December.
