Maxis to help Digital Penang develop digital ecosystem for MSMEs

Malaysian operator Maxis has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Digital Penang to develop a digital tech ecosystem space for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Penang’s digital start-up district.

Digital Penang was started by the Penang State Government in 2020 to develop and nurture its digital economy. Last year, Digital Penang launched CD Square, its first “creative digital district” in George Town to develop a digital ecosystem of digital tech start-ups, entrepreneurs, digital services and software companies.

Under the MoU, Digital Penang will connect Maxis with the various MSMEs within CD Square. Maxis’ business unit will leverage its digital solutions, 5G network, and fibre connectivity services to support MSMEs in Penang and boost digital adoption.

Maxis will also provide upskilling or reskilling services for business owners via its free digital marketing community programme, eKelas Usahawan, which provides entrepreneurs and small businesses with basic digital tools and skills.

“The Penang State Government is committed to lifting our communities and ensuring our MSMEs stay competent in this digital age,” said Zairil Khir Johari, chairman of Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Development in the Penang State Executive Council, as well as the board director of Digital Penang.

“We are working with communities to increase awareness on the value and benefits of digitalisation,” added Digital Penang CEO Ts. Ng Kwang Ming. “This includes MSMEs to increase their online presence and extend their business reach beyond Penang's borders.”
