Cybersecurity awareness month begins in October

Cybersecurity awareness month will be observed in October with this year’s theme ‘secure our world’.

On the occasion, different educational and technology-based organisations have taken elaborate programmes in the capital Dhaka today.

In 2004, the United States declared that the month of October would be observed as Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a dedicated month for the public and private sectors to work together to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity.

Since 2012, many European countries have been observing the month annually.

This is the 20th Cybersecurity Awareness Month and it has grown into a collaborative effort between the government and the industry to enhance cybersecurity awareness, encourage actions by the public to reduce online risk and generate discussion on cyber threats on a national and global scale.

In a press statement on Saturday, National Committee on Cybersecurity Awareness, a platform of IT professionals and legal practitioners, called on the government to observe the month at the national level.

Robi Axiata Limited and technology service provider Cyber Paradise, among others, are running the month-long awareness programme.

The Bangladesh government has identified cybersecurity as one of the most serious economic and national security challenges faced by the country.

As a step towards government’s commitment to strengthening national cybersecurity, Bangladesh Cybersecurity Strategy 2021-2025 has been formulated to support four pillars of the digital Bangladesh initiative– digital government, human resource development, IT industry promotions, and connectivity and infrastructure.

In September, the Bangladesh Government’s Computer Incident Response Team, BGD e-GOV CIRT, carried out its primary mission of safeguarding the country’s cyberspace through proactive management of computer security incidents and related activities.

New Age reported in September that the banking sector in Bangladesh was at risk amid increasing incidents of cyber threats and hacking attempts, as most banks operating in the country do not have the resources and strategies to deal with those.

The report also stressed that skilled manpower and a monitoring system were needed to prevent such attacks.

Cyber security is now a major area of concern for the banking industry, with repeated hacking attempts, phishing attacks, malware attacks, OTP bypassing, and exposure of banking-related data to dark websites.
