Telia switches off 3G in capital Tallinn

Telia has confirmed that it has shut down its 3G network in the Estonian capital, Tallinn. The cellco turned off the 3G network between 4 September and 7 September, meaning Tallinn joins the likes of Laane County (March), Rapla County and Parnu County (April) and Harju County (May), all of which witnessed 3G shutdowns earlier this year. Going forward, the next locations scheduled for 3G shutdowns are Saaremaa, Hiiumaa, Ida and Laane-Viru in October.

Oliver Lekk, Head of Telia’s Radio Network Department, commented: ‘At one time, 3G started a revolution precisely by bringing mobile internet to the masses. Mobile internet traffic on our 3G network made up only 1% of Telia’s entire mobile internet volume at the beginning of this year.’

Telia says it now has 150 5G base stations covering the capital.
