Airtel Kenya earmarks US$150m to expand network

Airtel Kenya has outlined plans to invest a minimum of US$150 million into expanding its network across the next three years.

Citing comments from the operator’s CEO Ashish Malhotra, Business Daily reported that Airtel Kenya plans to install 649 new network sites nationwide – adding to its current portfolio of 3200 – to bring its population coverage to 89%.

Last month, Airtel Kenya brought commercial 5G services to 16 counties across the country, deploying more than 370 dedicated 5G sites. CommsUpdate reports that the operator plans to install a further 120 sites within the next three months.

Malhotra noted that: “the response has been good, though the penetration of 5G-enabled devices in the country is almost 1% of our total devices. It is purely an issue of the cost of devices.”
