National roaming now live in Senegal

Senegal’s mobile operators have implemented agreements to enable nationwide roaming between their networks.

Abdou Karim Sall, Director General of the Regulation Authority for Telecommunications and Posts (L’Autorite de Regulation des Telecommunications et des Postes, ARTP), said: “National roaming is now a reality in Senegal.”

While celebrating the fact that initial trials in the Diourbel region saw a 100% success rate for the transferral of calls and SMS between networks, Sall noted that some technical issues remained relating to mobile data traffic.

Senegal’s push for national roaming was spurred by a request from President Macky Sall to prioritise moves towards nationwide mobile network coverage. The initiative is aimed at extending connectivity to underserved areas as well as enabling service continuity in the event of a network outage.
