Antel expands 5G to additional cities

Uruguay’s state-owned telecoms operator Antel has significantly expanded coverage of its 5G network since the service was commercially launched at the end of June 2023. At that date, around 100 sites operating in the 3.5GHz band went live in the cities of Montevideo, Colonia, Canelones, Punta del Este and Maldonado, but in recent weeks 5G coverage has been expanded to cities including Trinidad, Paysandu, Fray Bentos, Young, Artigas, Salto, Rocha and Florida. The network is being steadily launched in each of the country’s 19 departmental capitals. Customers within coverage areas and with a 5G-compatible device will be able to trial the service for 30 days for free.

In addition, Antel has revealed that it is accelerating the deployment of its fibre-optic broadband network to locations including Florida (Fray Marcos, Nico Perez, Reboledo, Chamizo, Cerro Colorado, Cardal, Mendoza and Sarandi Grande), Rocha (Velazquez, La Coronilla and 18 de Julio), Canelones (Montes, Migues, Tala, San Ramon, Castellanos, Santa Rosa and San Antonio) and Durazno. Antel is aiming to complete the replacement of its remaining copper lines with fibre in the near future.
