Safaricom pledges 800 5G sites in Kenya

Safaricom announced plans to add 595 new 5G sites by the end of March 2023, as it aims to push ahead of rivals in Kenya and capitalise on rising connectivity demand.

Business Daily reported the increase will take Safaricom Kenya from 205 5G base stations to 800 in that time period.

Rival operator Airtel launched 5G services in 16 counties and 180 wards with the deployment of 370 5G sites.

Elsewhere, Safaricom’s parent company Vodafone Group has reportedly signed up satellite connectivity firm AST SpaceMobile to offer mobile services through its Kenyan unit.

Safaricom recently announced it had expanded its 5G network to 21 counties and counted 400,000 subscribers.
