Rack Centre to build new 12MW data centre in Lagos

Rack Centre, which describes itself as the only carrier and cloud-neutral Tier III Constructed Facility Certified data centre in Africa, has revealed plans to build a new 12MW data centre in the Ikeja area of Lagos in Nigeria.

The new facility will be known as the Rack Centre LGS 2 and will be situated on a 20,000 square metre greenfield site. The data centre will offer 3,240 square metres of lettable space and have a net IT load of 13.5MW, a figure that apparently includes its predecessor the LGS1 data centre, which is located in the district of Oregun, also in Lagos.

The Tier 3 LGS 1 facility has been operational since October 2013 and has an IT load of 1.5MW over 1,094 square metres after expansion in 2021.

The Data Centre Dynamics website says the construction is described a part of the company’s ambition to expand its data centre capacity in West Africa ten-fold. A groundbreaking event is planned for 27 April.

The company is intending to host hyperscalers, content and cloud delivery networks, and internet service providers (ISPs) at the colocation facility.

Rack Centre was founded in 2012 and acquired by Actis, a leading global investor in sustainable infrastructure, in 2020. It has an ecosystem including over 60 telecommunications carriers and ISPs and has direct interconnections to the five undersea cables serving the South Atlantic Coast of Africa, including Equiano and 2Africa. The company also claims to have the first EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) Green Certified data centre in Africa.
