Telekom Romania Mobile Communications has quietly launched 5G services in several cities using its existing radio spectrum, local paper Ziarul Financiar (ZF) reports. The surprise move follows the company’s decision to sit out last year’s 5G spectrum auction organised by the National Authority for Management & Regulation in Communications (ANCOM).
In a notification sent to customers earlier this month updating the contractual speeds provided by its mobile data services, Telekom – the country’s fourth largest mobile network operator by subscriptions – revealed the 5G service will enable upload/download transfer rates of 250Mbps/50Mbps, ZF writes. According to a coverage map on the cellco’s website, subscribers with compatible handsets can now access the network in the cities of Ploiesti, Pitesti, Sibiu and areas of Bucharest. Telekom is reportedly planning to extend availability to a further ten major cities, including Cluj-Napoca and Brasov. Rivals Vodafone Romania, RCS&RDS (DIGI) and Orange Romania all launched commercial 5G services in 2019.
