Lynk Global has signed an agreement with Vodafone Ghana to bring mobile coverage to all of Ghana’s population with Lynk’s “cell tower in space” satellite connectivity. This is Lynk’s second commercial contract with mobile network operator Telecel Group in Africa, following an agreement with Telecel Centrafrique in the Central African Republic.
Lynk’s service will expand Telecel Group’s coverage to more than 6 million Vodafone Ghana subscribers and will be utilized for extending rural coverage, including Maritime Economic Zone, as a backup to ensure service resilience, continuity of IoT devices, and as a terrestrial tower replacement for underperforming towers.
“We are excited at the possibilities this partnership brings to the country. It provides the unique opportunity to connect everyone everywhere and accelerates the benefits that connectivity offers in health, education, and job creation, especially for our women and youth,’’ commented Patricia Obo-Nai, CEO of Vodafone Ghana.
Telecel Group recently bought the majority stake in Vodafone Ghana from Vodafone International Holdings.
Lynk provides satellite connectivity directly to unmodified cell phones. Its service will allow customers of mobile network operators to send messages outside of cellular networks.
