Mexico’s Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones (IFT) has granted an additional 30 years of validity to concessions held by fixed line providers Telmex and Telnor.
Both operators are subsidiaries of America Movil, and were issued their licences in 1990. In 2016, the companies’ licences were extended, following which Telmex’s was due to expire on 11th March 2026, with Telnor’s valid for an additional two months, expiring on 27th May 2026.
The extension to the licences does not alter the operators’ AEP (Agente Economico Preponderante / preponderant economic agent) status, which will continue to oblige them to adhere to the separate and asymmetric regulation, reports CommsUpdate.
Additionally, they remain bound to previously established Universal service and coverage requirements, under which they must continue to connect rural and remote areas. While Telmex is largely active nationwide, Telnor’s licence focuses on north-western Mexico, covering one state and two municipalities (Baja California and Sonora).
