The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) is looking to award spectrum to support 5G networks by the middle of this year. A report from Ecofin says the regulator wants licences allocated by the end of the second quarter, though it has not disclosed what bands it will release.
The country’s two main mobile network operators (MNOs) – MTN and Airtel – are both expected to launch commercial services as soon as spectrum becomes available. Airtel confirmed this week that its network is fully 5G-ready, while last month MTN announced a five-year strategic partnership with Huawei to carry out a 5G-capable core network modernisation project.
