Over 80,000 subscribers in Oman upgraded to 5G network in 2022

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) in cooperation with relevant companies was able to upgrade more than 80,000 subscribers to 5G network in the Sultanate of Oman by the end of 2022.

In a telephone interview with "Ma’a Al Shabiba" show, Engineer Nasser bin Mohammad Al Jabri, Director of Service Quality and Comprehensive Service Department at the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), said that the Authority relies on basic indicators to assess the quality of telecommunications services within the Sultanate of Oman.

Among such indicators are field surveys, which are announced annually according to a pre-prepared plan to survey and measure speeds in 11 wilayats, to measure internet speed, download speed, video quality, sound quality, in addition to internet speed when using social networks. After making these measurements, the Authority discloses them on its official accounts on social networks.

Al Jabri stated that the Authority is currently working to raise the efficiency of networks and improve fixed and mobile broadband speeds. One of the Authority's missions at the present time is to upgrade the home internet range of networks that operate via copper cables to upgrade it to the fifth-generation networks as well as fiber-optic networks.

On the other hand, the Authority worked on upgrading fixed broadband networks from the fourth generation networks to the fifth generation networks and fiber optics, in addition to spreading the fifth generation stations. It deployed nearly 2,500 5G stations during the past two years, and work is continuing to spread the stations in various regions of the Sultanate. The Authority is currently working, in cooperation with companies, to completely shut down 3G networks and focus on 4G and 5G networks.

Al-Jabri explained that the TRA works hard to improve the Sultanate's position in the “speed test” indicator, although it is a secondary indicator for the Authority. However, attention is paid to it and its indicators are being considered to improve the quality of services on the one hand and to improve the Sultanate's position in this indicator on the other hand.
