A total of 110 Chinese cities have been upgraded with gigabit fibre networks according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), up from 81 cities last year and 29 in 2021.
Local news outlet CCTime writes that the regulator made the announcement at the Second Gigabit City Forum event, alongside presentations from the nation’s main telcos. The MIIT also noted that a total of 2.312 million 5G base stations have been installed nationwide. Regarding the fibre footprints of the major providers, China Mobile claimed to have constructed the world’s largest fibre-optic network, spanning more than 25 million kilometres and passing over 600 million households. China Telecom, meanwhile, reported that its fibre-optic infrastructure had been installed in 345 cities with a total of 500 million homes passed and its Standalone (SA) 5G system is now available in 300 cities. For its part, China Unicom added that its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network passed 450 million households.
