Ukrtelecom provides free Wi-Fi in 700 public zones

Ukrainian telco Ukrtelecom has opened 700 free public Wi-Fi zones in five cities: Kyiv, Dnipro, Lviv, Odessa and Kharkiv, it reports on its website. Telecommunication cabinets are marked with stickers to inform citizens where they can access the internet free of charge, even in the event of a temporary power outage – in the absence of electricity in the area, the service may still be available for up to four hours. The ‘UKRTELECOM_FREE’ network provides data speeds of up to 20Mbps in an average radius of up to ten metres from the street cabinets, the locations of which are also shown on the telco’s website. Ukrtelecom notes that it also provides free Wi-Fi in around 200 customer service centres around the country, whilst the company adds that about 60% of Ukrtelecom fixed broadband subscribers have the ability to use the internet for a certain time during power outages by self-powering their home modem/router.
