MTC commissions 1,000th network tower

Namibia’s market-leading cellco Mobile Telecommunications (MTC) has announced the activation of its 1,000th network tower. The site in Okadhiya in the Oshana Region has been deployed as part of the operator’s NAD1.2 billion (USD69.8 million) 081Every1 project, launched in August 2017, which aims to extend network coverage to almost 100% of the population through the rollout of 524 new towers, while also upgrading infrastructure to 3G in rural areas and 4G in towns. According to the company, 268 sites have already been commissioned – 221 in rural areas and 47 in urban zones – and a further 24 are currently under construction.

Speaking at the launch event, MTC managing director Licky Erastus said the company was also preparing to roll out 5G as part of its commitment to improving connectivity, service quality and access to digital services. The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) revealed in late 2022 that it plans to issue 5G spectrum before next March.
