Wishaw residents can look forward to better 5G coverage after North Lanarkshire Council gave the go ahead to upgrading telecommunications equipment in the town.
Council planners have given the green light to the upgrading of existing telecommunication equipment including a 17.5 metre high replacement mast in the town’s Quarry Street.
The applicant, Cornerstone, put forward the proposals to the council back in November and with no letters of objection having been received, planners moved to grant the request.
The council report states: “This is an established telecommunications mast and base station site within what are generally industrial or commercial properties nearby, however there are residential properties located to the east and south of the site.
“It is proposed to remove the existing 15 metre high monopole mast which is currently located there as part of an upgrade of this base station.
“In this instance the mast requires planning permission due to the increase in size to the headframe as it was almost permitted development.
“The applicant has identified that there is a requirement to upgrade to 5G coverage to ensure that this is available for users in the locality.
