Ooredoo has congratulated Qatar on its recent ranking as the country with the fastest mobile Internet speeds in the world with a median download speed of 176.18Mpbs and median upload speed of 25.13Mbps achieved in November 2022. The November 2022 Speedtest Global Index Rankings report issued by industry benchmarker Ookla ranked Qatar ‘#1 globally’, showing an upwards move for the country by two positions in global rank since the previous report.
Qatar’s capital, Doha, and Al-Rayyan, were also named as the two top cities with the fastest mobile Internet speeds in the world. The results are based on the median download speed across the country compared to similar results globally. Ooredoo Qatar CEO Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulla al-Thani said: “As a pioneer of 5G, we congratulate Qatar on this incredibly prestigious accolade. We are staunch supporters of Qatar National Vision 2030, a key goal of which is complete digitalisation.
“Being named as the country with the fastest mobile Internet speeds in the world shows our country is making phenomenal progress and is well on the way to the achievement of this goal.”
The impressive speed test results were driven mainly by the recent award of additional 5G spectrum by the government and the modernisation of mobile networks in Qatar in preparation for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Sheikh Mohamed added: “The recent news of Qatar being named the country with the fastest mobile Internet speeds in the world in this latest Ookla report is perfect timing, as we have also just hosted the biggest sporting event in the world, where we both set and broke a number of telecommunications records throughout the event. It’s safe to say that Qatar has well and truly shown the world just what it can do and we’re delighted and proud to play a part in our country’s success.”
