Belgian full-service telecoms provider Telenet and its mobile unit Base have announced plans to begin switching off the 3G signal on their mobile networks from September 2024 in a phased shutdown.
With mobile data usage increasing by 30% every year and 3G devices accounting for just 1% of its network, the operator intends to use the frequencies to provide additional capacity, stability and higher speeds for 4G and 5G services. Older phones and tablets that are not 4G-capable will be able to use the 2G signal to make connections, as this technology will be supported until at least 2027.
