Mobiuz launches 5G network in parts of Tashkent

Uzbek mobile operator Mobiuz has launched a fledgling 5G network in parts of the capital Tashkent, with its online coverage map currently showing eight live 5G base stations around the city. Compatible device owners connected to the Mobiuz network on any existing consumer tariff may activate 5G services to receive data speeds of ‘up to 300Mbps’ for no additional fees, while if subscribing to a new Mobiuz tariff designed for 5G usage – ‘50,000MB internet package’ costing UZS75,000 (USD6.80) for 30 days – higher speeds are promised at ‘up to 1Gbps’. Significantly improved latency (network lag/response time) is promised for all 5G users.

TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that in August 2019 Mobiuz obtained a Chinese state ‘soft loan’ of USD150 million to finance investment projects using Huawei equipment up until 2023, covering widespread equipment upgrades, expansion of 3G/4G coverage in all regions, internet connectivity improvements and the phasing-in of 5G technology. Rival operator Ucell was the first in Uzbekistan to launch a limited-area 5G user zone, in Tashkent’s central business district, in April 2021, while Uzbektelecom is also developing the technology, having begun ‘pre-trial testing’ with Huawei in September 2019.
