The inter-regional meeting is held in Riyadh to prepare for the Plenipotentiary Conference 2022

Delegations from the six regions of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) gathere4d in Riyadh over August 30 and 31 to prepare for the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2022, to be held in Bucharest, Romania. The preparatory meeting, hosted by the Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC), will help the ITU establish the next four years of its global agenda ahead of the Bucharest voting sessions.

The meeting was launched in the presence of His Excellency the Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Haitham bin Abdulrahman Al-Ohali. Other key participants at the launch included His Excellency the Secretary-General of the Union, Mr. Houlin Zhao, and several Excellencies, ministers and ambassadors attached to the high-level delegations of the six Union regions.

The meeting aims to enhance discussions between regions and identify common positions on international policies, as well as explore the key issues in the ICT sector and their role in achieving the sustainable development goals. It will also review regional strategic and operational plans, discuss submitted decisions, and evaluate the regional nominations for elected positions in the ITU.

The Plenipotentiary Conference is the ITU’s highest policy-making body, staged every four years to set the Union’s general policies, establish four-year strategic and financial plans, and elect the senior management team of the organization, the Member States of the Council, and the members of the Radio Regulations Board.

The Kingdom has been a member of the ITU Council for 57 years and is an active participant in implementing its outputs, achieving sustainable development goals and promoting excellence and innovation in the field of communications and information technology. Saudi Arabia has been nominated to retain its seats on the ITU Council and Radio Regulations Board during the period 2023 – 2026.
