Sky Glass to launch in Ireland in August

Sky Glass, Sky’s integrated broadband TV, is to launch in Ireland next month.

The device that eliminates the need for a satellite dish or set-top box will be available from 25 August, though customer can already pre-order.

Sky Ireland CEO, JD Buckley, said he was thrilled Ireland would be the second market to launch Sky Glass. “Investing in the best technology, the best content and the best customer experience are always our top priorities and Sky Glass is the most innovative product we have developed yet. It opens the world of Sky to customers who may not have been able to access Sky TV before now.”

Sky Glass offers a similar selection of apps to the Sky Q box including Netflix, Amazon and Disney+, though there are some additions, such as RadioPlayer.

Sky Glass comes in a range of five colours (ocean blue, ceramic white, racing green, dusky pink, or anthracite black) in three display sizes, 43, 55 and 65 inch. Ultra HD and Quantum Dot technology between them produce over 1 billion colours. There are six speakers that support 360° Dolby Atmos sound with powerful built-in speakers and sub-woofer.

Certified as carbon neutral, the integration of set-top box and sound bar into the receiving reduces the energy. Rental prices begin at €15 per month for the 43-inch model rising to €26 for the 65-inch model.

Later this year, a small form-factor camera will provide a video return path for viewers that will enable them to chat, play games, workout and share entertainment at home. A partnership with Zoom will allow communications within households, moving in on a territory that is already being explored by Facebook and Amazon.
