Telkom completes first phase of 4G expansion in Coast and Lower Eastern regions

Telkom Kenya has announced the completion of the Coast and Lower Eastern phase of its nationwide mobile LTE expansion programme, covering Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu and Taita/Taveta, as well as Makueni, Machakos, Kitui and Kajiado Counties. The deployment of 224 mobile sites in those areas forms part of the nationwide network rollout plan that Telkom, together with its partners Ericsson and systems integrator NEC XON, announced in November last year. Overall, the company will roll out an additional 2,000 4G sites by 2023. Telkom says that the USD100 million nationwide rollout is part of its long-term network expansion strategy to address digital transformation and lay the groundwork towards the company’s long-term goal to become the technology partner of choice to its customers in Kenya and the region.

‘This is a very exciting milestone for Telkom. We firmly believe that mobile data is a fundamental human right and it has now emerged as a daily necessity,’ commented Telkom Kenya’s CEO Mugo Kibati, adding: ‘We remain committed to better position our infrastructure asset base and services to drive digital transformation within our various customer segments thus providing them with more value, as well as bridge the digital divide through the expansion of our mobile data network.’
