Slovak Telekom playing catch-up with rivals on VoLTE, VoWiFi

Slovak Telekom (ST) – which introduced VoLTE mobile calling services for post-paid consumers back in 2017 – is yet to expand the voice-over-4G capability to its whole customer base, with the cellco currently piloting VoLTE for B2B clients but yet to announce a schedule for enabling the functionality on pre-paid SIM cards, reports local publication Zive. ST’s mobile rivals Orange, O2 and 4ka all offer VoLTE for customers on both post-paid and pre-paid tariffs.

ST spokesman Michal Korec was quoted in the report as saying: ‘VoLTE is currently in pilot operation for business customers and will go into full operation in the next phase. VoLTE for pre-paid cards will be deployed later.’

Furthermore, ST is lagging behind its rivals in rolling out Voice-over-Wi-Fi (VoWiFi, or Wi-Fi Calling). Orange Slovakia launched VoWiFi in 2017, with O2 following suit in 2020 and 4ka being the latest to announce VoWiFi availability on selected devices at the start of last month. On this matter, Michal Korec told Zive: ‘We [ST] are not currently planning the deployment of VoWiFi, but we are counting on it in the future.’
