Globe taps banks for cybersecurity defence

Globe Telecom partnered up with financial institutions including Unionbank to bolster its cybersecurity and revealed it blocked nine million scam messages in the first half of this year alone.

In a statement, the Philippines-based operator said the agreement with Unionbank enabled a “faster alerting mechanism” and “seamless” data sharing to filter out fraudulent activity.

The operator detailed the 9 million messages were blocked between January to June 15, and 1,119 scam calls were also prevented from connection.

However, Globe reported around 138 million scam calls and spam messages detected on its network in the same period, with that number rising.

Moving forward, Globe will partner with online marketplaces such as Lazada and Shopee to utilise a whitelisting service on these platforms, as well as scam detection to protect customers.

“A lot of the investments we’ve made over recent years have allowed us to have better cybersecurity capabilities. We try to squeeze value out of those investments to make sure that we can reach our clients a little bit more directly. At the end of the day, we feel that their customers are our customers too, so we'd rather make sure that those attacks do not exist within the Globe environment,” said Globe chief information security officer Anton Bonifacio,
